What are AT and SM?

Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique can help you learn how to learn! It works from the premise that what we think is expressed through our bodies. We can therefore learn to use conscious thought to change habitual ways of doing things that might be causing us pain or discomfort. Using the technique we learn how to let go of habitual patterns of tension and find instead an ease and flow in movement. You might notice in learning the Technique an improvement in your posture, and sense of poise; and a general feeling of well-being and calm.

Shaw Method

The Shaw Method was developed about 30 years ago by Steven Shaw, an Alexander Technique teacher and former competitive swimmer. Based on Alexander Technique, it breaks down each element of a stroke into small progressions, both standing and swimming, helping swimmers to use their body effectively, moving through the water with ease. With the teacher in the water with the learner, explaining, demonstrating and using hands on guidance to demonstrate each progression, the experience is more immediate and connected than the “conventional” method of someone instructing from the side of the pool.
